South Dakota: Argus Leader endorses Hillary Clinton

Today, the Argus Leader announced its endorsement of Hillary Clinton. They state that Clinton is the strongest candidate for South Dakota and her energy policy is more forward thinking than Obama's.

In fact, Hillary is the only candidate with an energy policy. I cannot even recall what Obama's energy policy is or what policies he has proposed to "CHANGE" Washington politics.

None of us could have imagined that the Argus Leader would endorse Hillary Clinton after vociferously defending her comments last week.

I know one elderly woman in South Dakota that is going to vote for Clinton, unless she's changed her mind since I talked to her in March.

All the same, it's not Clinton country. Obama is going to win by a substantial margin. It will be good to end the primaries on a high note.

Obama only won the Nebraska primary by 2 or 3% last month. Is South Dakota all that different from NE?

He won the primary more narrowly because no one really cared about it. This is because it was months after the binding caucuses. You know, like Washington's also non-binding and not-cared-about primary. There's a reason they call those "beauty contests."

Ugh. Are people really so desperate that they need to cite a meaningless non-binding primary with very low turnout that Obama still won?!

I don't think ANY endorsements really mean much, be it newspapers, politicians or celebrities. People know how they want to vote, and endorsements have little or no effect on that.

As for this diary, it's weak. At least TexasDarlin included some excerpts and some positive commentary.

Clinton's energy policy is forward thinking and wise. She advocates a broad federal research initiative to help solve our looming oil crisis. It's a plan that would join university researchers, private industry and individual inventors behind a common goal.

Is ethanol part of the answer? Clinton believes it is but not necessarily corn ethanol.

That is not precisely the answer South Dakota wants to hear. Corn-based ethanol has been a boon for farmers here. But the simple fact is that she probably is correct. Advances in cellulosic ethanol technologies could render corn ethanol obsolete and wasteful. Happily, South Dakota is poised to be a major player in the push to experiment with other kinds of ethanol.

everybody knows, especially the farmers, that corn ethanol is a dead end. it just takes courage to say so. it's to the argus leader staff's credit - and hillary's - that they did so, and are looking forward to developing cellulose-based ethanol production. that's a vastly superior policy approach to, say, jumping into bed with jim bunning on liquified coal.

There are 276 delegates left
Obama needs 40.5
Hillary needs 243

Unless Florida and Michigan are seated as is then:
Then there will be 374 delegates
Obama will need 135.5
Hillary will need 236.5

In that case,
Obama should get at least 36 or the remaining 86 pledged delegates, 24 more add-ons, and at least 30 of the "uncommitted pledged delegates" from Michigan. That would mean that Obama only needs another 45 or so super delegates to clinch this.

So it really doesn't matter what happens in SD now does it. The real action is in the RBC this Saturday. Anything but seated "as is" will have no significant impact on the nomination contest and it is not sounding like seated "as is" will be the outcome at the RBC.
